Selecting the Right Laptop
Author: PC-Buyer
I’ve been known around the office as the computer whiz, and a little while back a co-worker approached me about purchasing a laptop. Now I tend to prefer PCs, but I do know a thing or two about laptop computers. I asked my coworker what he wanted in a computer, and he said he was looking for a laptop for practical uses, but also one that he could use to play computer games. There’s seldom a laptop out there that can’t be used for ‘practical purposes’ but gaming is more specialized. You want a laptop with a high performance video card and a lot of RAM for gaming.
I recommended Apple laptops to my coworker; they’re all high performance machines, and despite having less customizability than other brands, the interface is so clean there’s no need to customize. I told him Dell Inspirion laptops were also great for gaming if he wanted to use Windows.
Picking up Your First Computer

My sister was totally computer illiterate up until last month. It’s not as though she had never been exposed to computers. We had two computers in the house where we grew up and she had to take a computer class in high school. I guess she just never paid attention.
But recently she started a new job as a travelling sales person for a furniture company. She has to take a laptop computer on the road with her to keep track of client’s accounts. Her employer provided her with an Acer Aspire laptop. This computer is so easy to use she picked it up right away. Now she doesn’t know what she would do without it.
Choosing a New Laptop

If you’re in the market to purchase a new laptop, there are many variables to consider. First and foremost, you want something that will have a reasonably long life, because the longer you have the laptop, the better the value. Do keep in mind, however, that long life for a laptop is significantly lower than a desktop computer. Anywhere around four years is considered decent use for a laptop. After that, repairs start to make it more cost effective to simply purchase a new computer.
You’ll also want to purchase a laptop with the greatest amount of memory that you can afford. This applies to your hard drive and RAM. Running on low memory can cause your computer to start to seriously malfunction, and it will run quicker and smoother if you have a lot of excess memory to work with. Also make sure to read a lot of user reviews. Whether you’re purchasing a Dell Inspirion laptop or an Apple iBook, you want to have a good idea what users are saying about the interface and general usage of the laptop. But remember to take these reviews with a grain of salt. Every review is just one person’s experience, which always has the potential to be abnormal.
How HP Got to the Top

One of the most established names in technology is HP, which stands for Hewlett-Packard. Based in California, the company was founded out of a garage in 1939. The original investment for the company was $538, and in 2007, the revenue reached $104 billion. Not only is this an almost unfathomable amount of money, but it also marked an important milestone for any IT company. They were the first to report revenue which exceeded $100 billion.
The company has done so well in part because of their reputation and in part because of their diverse product line. In terms of the latter, HP offers everything from an HP Touchsmart laptop to an HP digital camera. They are also particularly well known for their printers, scanners, televisions, and more. In addition to this wide range of products, they have also built a name for themselves by using the “HP Way” style of management. This is marked by respect for the company employees, and that ideology has carried over to the customer as well.
A No-Frills Laptop for Casual Users

Unlike many of my friends, I have very little interest in playing computer games. While many of them have customized their own desktops by adding fans and special graphics cards to the mix, I much prefer being outside or reading a good novel. On the other hand, I do enjoy downloading music and listening to it on my laptop. I must also confess to a weakness for watching DVDs on a 16-inch laptop screen.
So, when my old laptop finally crapped out after three years of wear and tear, I wasn’t sure where to turn. It seemed that most of the high-end computers in stores were geared toward gaming geeks and professionals rather than a casual computer user such as myself. All I really needed from the device was an easy way to surf the Web, play music and watch movies. The Compaq Presario met all those needs without tacking on unnecessary extras and the inflated price tag that goes with them.
A New Generation Hits the Oregon Trail

When I was growing up, typing classes were still taught on a manual typewriter and the only computer in my classroom throughout elementary school was a severely dated Apple II. Some of my fondest academic memories have nothing to do with term papers, homework assignments or lab projects. Playing “The Oregon Trail” was an educational experience in itself. The game taught kids to ration food and provisions, to think critically about the supplies required to survive and many other valuable skills.
When I saw an Apple iBook for sale online, I immediately purchased it for my young son. I knew about Apple’s rich tradition of educational computer games, and sought out an “Oregon Trail” CD ROM among other games. While the graphics on MacBook games might be vastly superior, the quality of game play is just as good on this platform as any other Apple computer.
Satisfying the Scrupulous Shopper

I’ve never been much of an impulse shopper. In fact, I’m so careful about budgeting and keeping close track of my finances that I rarely if ever purchase anything more than groceries or household supplies without plenty of due diligence and consumer research. That’s the sort of forethought I put into my most recent consumer electronics purchase – a replacement for my dying Dell laptop.
I visited several electronics stores and compared prices on dozens of PCs. It seemed as though the stores had gotten together and come to an agreement on their sales prices as no single deal really stood out. Then I used my old laptop’s last few dying breaths to scan the online market. In a matter of moments I found an HP Pavilion laptop that had all the features I desired as well as an eye-pleasing external design.
Laptops for Ambitious Moms

Last year I had my second child in as many years and decided to make a drastic career change. Secure in the knowledge that my husband made enough income to help facilitate such a transition, I took a few months off work to stay at home with the kids. As much as I relished catching every moment of my young children’s development – and capturing many of them on film for posterity – something was missing.
My natural ambition began to manifest itself, and before long I had my mind back on business during my parenting “off hours.” I bought a no-frills, affordable Acer notebook online and set up a home office from which to operate my home-based business. Now when I become engrossed in my work and my husband is home, I have him deal with the kids. Everything you’ve heard about telecommuting is true – it’s easy and convenient to the extreme.
Working under Deadline Pressure

Like many college students, I’m something of a procrastinator when it comes to homework, research papers and presentations. If a given project is has the potential to make or break my grade, I might spend a few days on it, but I just can’t bring myself to start a week ahead of time. Lately I’ve become a little better at budgeting my time, but last semester saw a number of close calls.
I almost outdid myself during finals week, when my group waited until the last minute to come up with an English presentation. We finally got together and worked well into the night before it was due, staying awake in the library with the help of chocolate and caffeine. The next morning, we strolled into class with my HP Touchsmart laptop, set up the presentation and proceeded to captivate our classmates. Maybe one day this whole procrastination thing will finally catch up to me, but for now I’ll just accept that I do my best work under deadline pressure.
A Computer That’s Beautiful Inside and Out

From its inception, the Macintosh computer was designed to be a user-friendly alternative for overly complex PCs. In the early 1980s, IBM was the reigning king of the computing world, and Apple was the scrappy underdog just scraping by. Apple took advantage of the Super Bowl’s highly coveted advertising spots to promote compare IBM to Big Brother from the George Orwell novel 1984.
Although there have been a few missteps, Apple has been more or less among the industry leaders ever since. The company is known for its innovative design breakthroughs, as well as its intuitive user interface. What the computers might lack in raw processing power they generally make up for with charm and durability. The Apple iBook G4 is one of the most recent in a long line of reliable products from a company that continues to push the boundaries of design and user-friendliness.
