On the school front, it’s also important to have a reliable laptop. A desktop computer is cumbersome and difficult to move, while a laptop can simply be thrown in a laptop bag and carried around. My sister was totally computer illiterate up until last month. It’s not as though she had never been exposed to computers. We had two computers in the house where we grew up and she had to take a computer class in high school. I guess she just never paid attention.

But recently she started a new job as a travelling sales person for a furniture company. She has to take a laptop computer on the road with her to keep track of client’s accounts. Her employer provided her with an Acer Aspire laptop. This computer is so easy to use she picked it up right away. Now she doesn’t know what she would do without it.

If you’re in the market to purchase a new laptop, there are many variables to consider. First and foremost, you want something that will have a reasonably long life, because the longer you have the laptop, the better the value. Do keep in mind, however, that long life for a laptop is significantly lower than a desktop computer. Anywhere around four years is considered decent use for a laptop. After that, repairs start to make it more cost effective to simply purchase a new computer.

You’ll also want to purchase a laptop with the greatest amount of memory that you can afford. This applies to your hard drive and RAM. Running on low memory can cause your computer to start to seriously malfunction, and it will run quicker and smoother if you have a lot of excess memory to work with. Also make sure to read a lot of user reviews. Whether you’re purchasing a Dell Inspirion laptop or an Apple iBook, you want to have a good idea what users are saying about the interface and general usage of the laptop. But remember to take these reviews with a grain of salt. Every review is just one person’s experience, which always has the potential to be abnormal.

Unlike many of my friends, I have very little interest in playing computer games. While many of them have customized their own desktops by adding fans and special graphics cards to the mix, I much prefer being outside or reading a good novel. On the other hand, I do enjoy downloading music and listening to it on my laptop. I must also confess to a weakness for watching DVDs on a 16-inch laptop screen.

When I saw an Apple iBook for sale online, I immediately purchased it for my young son. I knew about Apple’s rich tradition of educational computer games, and sought out an “Oregon Trail” CD ROM among other games. While the graphics on MacBook games might be vastly superior, the quality of game play is just as good on this platform as any other Apple computer.

I’ve never been much of an impulse shopper. In fact, I’m so careful about budgeting and keeping close track of my finances that I rarely if ever purchase anything more than groceries or household supplies without plenty of due diligence and consumer research. That’s the sort of forethought I put into my most recent consumer electronics purchase – a replacement for my dying Dell laptop.

I visited several electronics stores and compared prices on dozens of PCs. It seemed as though the stores had gotten together and come to an agreement on their sales prices as no single deal really stood out. Then I used my old laptop’s last few dying breaths to scan the online market. In a matter of moments I found an HP Pavilion laptop that had all the features I desired as well as an eye-pleasing external design.

Last year I had my second child in as many years and decided to make a drastic career change. Secure in the knowledge that my husband made enough income to help facilitate such a transition, I took a few months off work to stay at home with the kids. As much as I relished catching every moment of my young children’s development – and capturing many of them on film for posterity – something was missing.

My natural ambition began to manifest itself, and before long I had my mind back on business during my parenting “off hours.” I bought a no-frills, affordable Acer notebook online and set up a home office from which to operate my home-based business. Now when I become engrossed in my work and my husband is home, I have him deal with the kids. Everything you’ve heard about telecommuting is true – it’s easy and convenient to the extreme.
